The Story Behind Hue Collective
Tāwhirimātea and
Hinepūtehue
The name Hue Collective is connected to the pūrākau of Hinepūtehue and her encounter with Tāwhirimātea.
It is a story about expression, calm and the ability to create something meaningful from difficult circumstances. These ideas continue to influence how we understand our role and the way we approach our mahi.
Following the separation of Ranginui and Papatūānuku, Tāwhirimātea turned his anger upon his brothers. His winds tore through the forests of Tāne and drove the seas of Tangaroa into unrest.
Hinepūtehue stood within that turmoil.
As the winds passed over the hue, they drew out a deep and resonant sound. The voice of the hue shifted the anger of Tāwhirimātea, ended the age of rage and unrest, and welcomed in an age of transformational peace.
Stories such as this are central to the way we teach. They connect our people with their own histories, values and ways of understanding the world. Through these connections, we aim to give people the knowledge, tools and confidence to recognise their own strengths and apply them within their whānau and communities.
For Hue Collective, this speaks to the possibility of creating peace from unrest and shaping something meaningful from what might otherwise overwhelm us.

Why Hue Exists?
Hue Collective grew from our experience delivering wānanga and community kaupapa alongside Raukawa. Through that mahi, we saw the value of creating spaces where people could reconnect with culture, identity and one another.
Hue now exists to continue that work through wānanga, storytelling, cultural facilitation and creative practice.
Our mahi is guided by kaupapa Māori and designed to leave people with stronger connections, greater confidence and practical tools they can carry forward.
